The Dataw Historic Foundation has received its fourth preservation award from the Historic Beaufort Foundation in recognition of its work in preserving the Sams Plantation historic site in the Dataw Island community.
More on the exciting two drone studies that form the basis for this award can be found here (Lewis Reeves Sams Plantation House Ruins) and here (Dr. Berners Barnwell Sams, MD cotton dikes.)
Historic Beaufort Foundation Trustee Rob Montgomery and Executive Director Cynthia Jenkins presented the “Director’s Award” to the Dataw Historic Foundation. Their president, Marilyn Peck, accepted the award on the group’s behalf in December 2024.
In grateful recognition of innovative efforts to advance the knowledge of the historic Sams Plantation through the use of 21st century technology in the fieldof historic preservation. The Dataw Island Historic Foundation, in February 2022, utilized drone technology to survey and identify the intact tabby ruins of the Lewis Reeve Sams House. Their findings shed new light on architectural details and similarities to other historic Lowcountry building practices of the late 18th century. Additional drone surveys, conducted in November 2022, identified historic impoundments and earthen dikes built by Dr. Bernard Barnwell Sams at Datha Inlet Plantation following the Revolutionary War. This information has provided greater understanding of the island’s agricultural history.
Presented to the Dataw Island Historic Foundation, President Marilyn Peck, this day, December 9, 2024, by the Board of Trustees of the Historic Beaufort Foundation.
